Pool parties can be a fun way to beat the summer heat, or if you have a hot tub, such as a Hot Spring® or FreeFlow hot tub, it can also be a relaxing way to spend a cool evening or even chilly fall or winter day. But merely splashing in the pool or lounging in the hot tub just doesn’t feel like a full-fledged party. If you’re going to invite your friends and family over, you want to make sure that it is something extra special. There are plenty of ways to take a normal afternoon dip in the pool and turn it into a day or evening that your guests will remember for years to come. Here are 10 of the best tips and tricks to creating an environment that everyone will talk about at all of your future gatherings.

1. Themed Party Ideas

One way to make a party fun before your guests even arrive is to have a theme that they can prepare for before they even arrive. Some theme ideas that work well with a pool party are luau and nautical-themed parties. Or if you and your friends are movie buffs, invite them to bring something reminiscent of one of their favorite movies or television shows with pool or beach scenes. Any “Jaws” or “Baywatch” fans in your group could bring an inflatable shark or wear a red lifeguard suit.

2. Create Games

Especially if not all of your guests will know each other, having games will be a great way to get everyone to interact with each other. If you ask your guests to bring an item from a movie, your guests can take turns guessing which movie each other’s items are from. There are also numerous games that the kids can play with pool rings and balls, or even a game of Marco Polo.

3. Invitations

If you’re going to have a theme, make sure that you tell your guests on the invitations. If you decorate the invitations with your theme, your guests will know that you plan on going all out with the theme.

4. Drinks

Of course, people will get thirsty. For adults, there is a wide range of alcoholic drinks that are reminiscent of the beach. Pina Coladas, margaritas, Long Island iced teas, and rum runners are all popular choices. And many of these drinks can be made virgin for the kids. Buy a pina colada mix and leave the rum out, or just buy some lemon-lime soda, grenadine, and cherries for Shirley Temples, and the kids can feel like they get to enjoy something special, too. You’ll also want to keep plenty of bottled water so that people are encouraged to stay hydrated.

5. Food

You’ll want to have plenty of food available, as well. There’s something about swimming that makes people hungry. You can have a full meal, but also make sure that you have plenty of snacks for people in case they get hungry before you’re ready to serve. Like all aspects of a party, food as well can tie into your theme. For instance, if you plan on having just a few of your closest friends over for a hot tub party when in the fall, you can still have a theme that everyone can enjoy. Consider having a Halloween-themed party with drinks and food that you would find at other Halloween parties like peeled grapes in a bowl and cupcakes with ghost decorations.

6. Music

Everybody loves to dance at a party. This is just as true at a pool party, but there are some pretty neat ways that you can blast the tunes. You can go with the traditional speakers, but you can also have floating LED speakers throughout the inground pool or hot tub.

7. Dancing

If you’re going to have music, don’t be surprised if a few people want to let their fingers and toes unwrinkle by getting out of the pool and dancing for a while. You can have a designated dance floor area on the pool deck that you mark off with streamers, confetti, and a sign letting people know where they can let loose.

8. Decorations

If you’re going to have that Halloween hot tub party after trick-or-treating is done, you can get creative with the decorations. You can even put green LED strip lights around the edge of the hot tub so that with the steam rising off of the surface it looks like you’re all entering the witch’s cauldron.

9. Entertainment

Beyond holidays or just the annual summer block party, you can also throw swimming pool parties for birthdays. For a children’s party, you can go with a classic entertainer such as a clown or magician. For later in the evening, you can plan on showing a movie on the side of your inground pool. You’ll need a screen and a movie projector, but you’re guests can lazily float on inflatable rafts as the movie plays on the side of the swimming pool.

10. Safe and Clean is Fun

With all of the planning that you’re doing, don’t forget about some of the utilitarian plans. People will need to use the bathroom, so especially if you are having a large group over, make sure that make signs indicating where the bathroom is and the route that you would like your guests to take. Yes, it’s only water that they’re dripping, but if guests know exactly which bathroom that you want them to use, then you’ll have less clean-up later. You should also have a first aid kit available for the inevitable scrape or bump.

Pool and hot tub parties are a place that you can let your creativity flow, and you can have multiple activities going on with the pool or hot tub at the center.
