Welcome back to part 2 of our Hot Tub Time Machine series on the evolution of the hot tub. In our last segment, we discovered that it was the Jacuzzi brothers who helped make hydrotherapy a “thing” back in the 50’s which, eventually, led to the creation and mainstreaming of spas. So, let’s jump right back into the mid-80’s, where big hair and John Hughes movies reigned supreme.
It was during this decade that spas really began to increase exponentially in popularity due to their ease of installation and portability. In fact, spa sales reached a peak in 1988 with a record number of 280,000 being sold.
The popularity continued on into the 90’s, as did the innovation of the product. In 1995, Hot Spring debuted the synthetic cabinet (surround) due to the scarcity and increasing cost of redwood. This implementation made it even easier for customers to own their very own spa. Portable spas continued to evolve with increased options regarding color, number of jets, and horsepower and, as the years continued on, so did the innovation.
By the time Y2K came to be, the “green movement” was going strong, and there was a calling for the spa industry to begin producing more energy efficient models. Product complexity also skyrocketed during the years following 2000, and not just in regards to number of jets, either. New and exciting integrations – such as lighting systems, stereos, flat screen TV’s and, eventually, Wi-Fi and iPod docks soon became accessible to all consumers (not just the rich and famous). In fact, present day innovations include being able to control your spa via a computer or smart phone! Water care has also been improved and simplified dramatically, which makes the ownership experience much easier for consumers.
So, what’s next for hot tubs? Well, we’ve already seen their implementation into limousines and private planes which means that, for all intents and purposes, the sky really IS the limit! One thing is for certain – there’s never been a better time to own a spa than there is right now. The units on the market today are pretty darn amazing if we do say so ourselves. They’re both reliable and efficient, and come packed with all sorts of fun features to help make your spa experience as amazing as possible.
